He's brought his message of how to smarten up by lightening up to hundreds of thousands of people who are high-tech, low-tech, and no-tech-at-all. With his hilarious way of poking fun at the frustrations of everyday life, Jim Pelley demonstrates uproariously how to use humor to become more creative, more productive, and less stressed.

Last Meeting, Mar-07-2024: Molly Shea, Department of Fish & Wildlife - Nimbus Fish Hatchery
Molly Shea is an Interpreter II for the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW). She leads education programming and public services at the Nimbus Hatchery Visitor Center and oversees public services at North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve. Molly presentation was named "Simming into Nimbus" covering Nimbus Hatchery’s operations, basic salmon and steelhead biology, and current efforts the CDFW is taking to support populations of Chinook salmon & steelhead trout.

Molly represents Region 2 of CDFW, ranging from San Joaquin County in the Southwest to Plumas County in the Northeast.  In Region 2, besides the Nimbus Fish Hatchery (off Hazel near Highway 50), there are Classroom Education programs, to Fishing in the City to North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve near Lake Oroville.

If you're wondering why there is a hatchery at Nimbus Dam (near Hazel Ave. exit tp Highway 50), Molly had the answer.  The dam was built in 1955.  The dam blocks the upstream runs of salmon and steelhead as they looked for spawning grounds.  The hatchery is to raise these species of fish to make up for the loss of habitat.  Molly educated us on the life cycle of salmon from eggs to alevin to fry to smolt which head to the ocean where they develop into adults.  Out of the 3,000-5,000 eggs harvested from one female fish, only 4 survive to adulthood for 3 years in the ocean and only 2 survive the upriver run to spawn.  In the case of Nimbus Dam, the fish have an upriver run of 141 miles.

To enhance your visit to Nimbus it helps to know that the salmon fish ladder activity and egg harvesting is primarily in Nov.-Dec.  For steelhead, the comparable season is Jan-Feb.  The annual release goals are for 4.5 million Chinook Salmon and 430,000 steelhead.  If you want more data and maps of the activities and counts of Chinook Salmon in NorCal rivers, please see the CDFW GrandTab and the Annual Report.  Besides visiting the hatchery, Molly encouraged us to volunteer at the Visitor Center or in other program areas.  For information, call 916-358-2884 or visit the Nimbus Hatchery website.  A club member complimented Molly on one of the most informative and entertaining presentations he had seen in a year.
