Molly Shea is an Interpreter II for the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW). Molly has a diverse background in environmental education. Prior to her work at California Department of Fish & Wildlife, she has worked for organizations like the National Park Service, Portland Audubon, and California State Parks in Santa Cruz. During her free time, she can be found crafting with yarn and fabric, tending to her plants both inside and out, or adventuring outside with her binoculars and nature journal. She is fluent in American Sign Language and enjoys connecting with the local Deaf community wherever she lives.

Molly’s presentation will cover Nimbus Hatchery’s operations, basic salmonid biology, and current efforts CDFW is taking to support populations of Chinook salmon & steelhead trout.

Last Meeting,  Feb-22-2024:  Wendy Wood, Placerville Friends of Tibet
Dr. Wendy Lucas Wood is a conflict engagement professional, mediator, social scientist, consultant, trainer, and author, works globally to collaborate on critical areas, including health and social welfare, environmental justice, and disaster relief.  She has past experiences working with Rotary Peace Fellows both in the United States and abroad.

Wendy provided a brief history about the Tibetan monks, and establishment of the Gaden Shartse Monastic University in the remote countryside of India in 1969.  Today the college serves approximately 1,600 resident students, teachers, scholars, and spiritual practitioners.  Most students were born in Tibet, and range in age between 10-25 years but some are as young as 4.

Wendy belongs to Placerville Friends of Tibet, a community organization comprising of volunteers who have arranged local three-week tours with Tibetan monks annually for the last 23 years.  Their mission is to share the culture, arts, philosophy, and science of Tibetan Buddhism with the community. The monks tour the United States in 2-year intervals, spreading their message of compassion, harmony, and peace.  Additionally, the funds raised during these tours contribute to supporting their prayer hall at the Gaden Shartse Monastic University.  In our area alone, $100,000 was raised.

The visiting monks stayed with Wendy and her husband, and most events took place at the Federated Church in Placerville including the building and dissolution of a mandala.  A colorful sand mandala is unique to Tibetan Buddhism.  It is a geometric design or pattern in a circle that represents the cosmos or deities (i.e., purification, healing, blessing, environmental) in various heavenly worlds.  To show impermanence, the mandala is then dismantled in a “dissolution” ceremony.  The visiting monks also did community blessings at Marshall and Mercy Hospitals, as well as pet blessings at the church.
