Wanda Gaines spoke on the theme of "It's Time to Change the Story" as it relates to the Crowning Ceremony program. She showed many examples of recent headlines that show the challenges that our young people face and the bad things that are happening to them. It's time to stop pointing fingers and do something. The SS/CP Chamber of Commerce is searching for youth who: have inspiring stories; are great role models; and who can share their stories with our community. The Crowning Ceremony program is also looking for adults who will: support the Crowning Program seek out & nominate youth with inspiring stories; be a positive mentor for youth; provide volunteer opportunities; and will share their stories and be contageious in other communities. Wanda also wants as many as possible of us to buy tickets for the crowning event at $10/single-ticket or $8/ticket if you buy 4 or more for the Crowning Ceremony at the CP CSD on Tuesday, June 18th. People are encouraged to arrive at 5:30 and the program runs from 6pm to 8pm.
Two of the seven CP Rotary Academic Scholarship award winners joined us for lunch on the 13th: Maia and Mikayla (last names withheld due to club policy). Dave Sargent introduced them and encouraged each to take the podium and tell us something about their high school interests and plans for the future.
Maia had strong interests in Mathematics, Sciences, and Choir at Ponderosa High. She was a junior volunteer for 3 years at Marshall Medical Center in Placerville, sparking a strong interest in medical research. She will attend U.C. San Diego and major in Molecular and Cell Biology for her bachelor's degree, with hopes of eventually earning a master's or Ph.D. degree and becoming a cancer researcher.
Mikayla was a standout in water polo, swimming and diving at Ponderosa, was in Ponderosa Choir, and excelled in science courses like Honors Human Anatomy and Physiology and AP Biology. Mikayla has been passionate about becoming a physical therapist since a young age, and has been admitted into the Honors Program at Boise State in Idaho, where she hopes to earn a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and then continue on towards a Ph.D. in Physical Therapy.

Shiva Frentzen was named a Paul Harris Fellow for the first time.
