Five students from Ponderosa High School competed in the Annual Cameron Park Rotary Speech Contest. Their first names, grades, and future academic interests are: Carter, 11th grade, wants to be a biology or bio-mechanics major; Sabrina, 9th grade, too early to know what college major she wants; McKayla, 11th grade, mathematics, but loves to write, so maybe an English minor; Ashley, 11th grade, take a year break to travel and volunteer in Africa, then English major, aiming to teach; and Ollie, 11th grade, art major with an emphasis in animation and illustration. All of the 4-8 minute speeches based on the Rotary theme of "Be the Inspiration" were excellent and held the Rotarians complete attention. This time, we were allowed to applaud after each speech. The winner of a $250 first place prize was Carter, followed by McKayla, who received $150 as the second place prize, and Sabrina, Ashley and Ollie were all given the same $75 prize, tying for third place. As a follow-up to this story and last week's story about our Music Contest, the Area 6 version of these contests occurred Sunday April 7 in Placerville. Carter, our club speech winner as described above, won the Area 6 contest, and he will be representing the four Area 6 clubs at the District Conference in Reno next month. Andrew, winner of our club music contest, placed third in Area 6. |
