My Amazon Adventure
My Amazon Adventure
Club member Laurie Edwards went on an exciting Amazon adventure in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in northeastern Ecuador near the Colombia border approximately 3 years ago.  The remote lodge where she stayed is accessible only by canoe.

The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is the 2nd largest national park in Ecuador comprising of 1.5 million acres of lowland tropical flooded rainforest with 8 major ecosystems. It is the only Amazonian park near the Andes with a dense network of beautiful lakes and navigable creeks. There are more than 560 species of birds, 350 species of fish and approximately 12,000 different types of plants that exist in the park.   No other national park in the Amazon region offers this kind of landscape, jungle experience and wildlife visibility from the water!

Landscape Photography

In 1984, Paul Cockrell and his wife, Ruth Michelson, moved from Walnut Creek to Placerville because of the beauty of the county, nearness to the Sierra, and the local environment. They also own a house at Mono Lake which they use as a base for Eastern Sierra photography outings. Paul splits his time working part-time as a design engineer, photographer, and co-owner with Ruth of the Placerville Art Gallery, 352 Main Street, in Placerville. Currently 28 artists have their work at the gallery, which opened in 2015.

Paul photographs landscapes primarily in El Dorado County and the Eastern Sierra. He also photographs engineering projects such as water treatment plants, power plants, bridges, and other transportation projects, which often requires travel across the US. Engineering and photography go well together as photography is a very technical art. He teaches local one day photo workshops and multi-day photography workshops in the Eastern Sierra and Bodie.

Paul will share some of his photographs, and discuss his processes to make the final print look like what he saw when took the photograph.
