Mike Sproull, founder and Executive Director of the Food Bank of EDC, spoke to us last week. Mike established the Food Bank more than two decades ago and has grown it into one of the region’s most important safety-net organizations, serving individuals and families from El Dorado Hills to South Lake Tahoe.
Mike shared the history and impact of the food bank, including their work with veterans and seniors. In order to serve the entire county from one location, the Food Bank enlisted the help of 35 other charities that are strategically placed in all locations, Georgetown, Somerset, South Lake Tahoe, to come to the food bank once a week and get all their food to serve their local area Mike also discussed the recently started construction of a new 15,000 square foot building for an Emergency Resource Center.
In Q&A time, Tom asked about the types of supplies that will be stored in the new building. Mike explained that the emergency supplies such as tents, mobile showers, mobile washing machines, and electric generators will be stored for their use during disasters by fire and sheriff's departments, etc. Mike provided the address of the EDC Food Bank at 4550 Business Drive in Cameron Park and invited everyone to visit and volunteer.
We honored Mike with a canned food drive that filled up the Food Bank's collection barrel at the CPCSD. One way to help further is to contribute food or time to the Food 4 Vets community event. For details on that, click on Food 4 Vets .
