Last week, we enjoyed seeing and listening to that perennial favorite, the Music Contest, in which local high school students compete for a cash prize and the chance to advance in the Rotary Area and District. We had two talented performers competing for the prize this week. Ben Young (below) stepped in as the emcee when Youth board member, Sid Bazett, played it safe with the after-effects of a recent illness.
The first to perform was Kyle Clemons (above left) on the Alto Sax. He performed an excellent rendition of the bluesy "New York State of Mind" by Billy Joel. Kyle plays all sizes of saxophones, but likes this alto sax best. He also plays the piano. As other hobbies, he likes skiing and snowboarding in the winter and mountain biking the rest of the year.
Riley McCall (right) played two pieces on an electronic piano. The first was "Liebestraum" (translates as "Love Dream"), by Franz Liszt. It starts slow and dreamily, and then transitions to fast and challenging as the hands move rapidly all over the keyboard. His second piece was "Cantina Band" from the cantina scene in Star Wars Episode IV, by John Williams. It was a very lively and challenging piece as well. Riley also competes in Pole Vault on the track team.
The voting was very close, with a split decision -- some judge thought each performer was best. But based on points, Riley McCall won the first prize of $250 and will move on to the Area Music Contest on April 20th in Placerville. Kyle Clemons won the 2nd place prize of $100.
