This Week's Meeting, August 28, 2025:  Dave Sargent, CP Rotary Foundation

This week’s program features our own Dave Sargent. Dave retired in 2005 after a 36-year career in public education, including 22 years as Principal of Ponderosa High School. A Rotarian for nearly 40 years, Dave has held many leadership roles, including serving as Club President in 1996–97. Today, he continues to give back as President of the Rotary Club of Cameron Park Foundation Board and as International Services Chair.

This meeting also serves as our annual Foundation meeting, where the slate of officers for next year will be elected. Dave will guide us through important topics, including:

     - The distinction between the Rotary International Foundation and our own Cameron Park Rotary Community Foundation.

     - The impactful work of our local foundation- funds educational and vocational grants, and community projects that benefit both youth and adults.

     -  A “state of the foundation” update, covering our current financial standing and the initiatives we are pursuing.

     - The Darryl Rasmussen Endowment Fund, honoring the legacy of one of our treasured late Rotarians.

This promises to be an informative and inspiring program, and we look forward to hearing from Dave about the impact of our foundation and the good it makes possible in our community.

Last Week's Meeting, August 21, 2025:  District 5190 DG Larry Harvey's Visit
Last week, we welcomed District 5190 Governor Larry Harvey, who shared his vision for the Rotary year. His theme, “Make Dreams Come True,” celebrates Rotary’s power to turn ideas into reality. Inspired by his club’s Regal Rotary 8th Grade Leadership program (REGL), now growing nationwide, Larry reminded us that Rotary’s strength lies in inspiring and empowering future leaders.

DG Larry, AG Don Fuller, President Adam Marshall, and Membership Chair Anne Eckert helped welcome our newest Red Badge Rotarians- Buckeye Union School District Corporate Members: Camerado Middle School Assistant Principal Sara Matley and Buckeye Union School District Superintendent David Roth. Kathy Thompson was also recognized with her Blue Badge, having quickly completed her Red Badge requirements—a true sign of her dedication to service and fellowship.

Larry emphasized key priorities for the year: membership growth, polio eradication, and expanding Rotary’s impact locally and globally. He encouraged clubs to take advantage of district support—from membership growth and retention to club development. Upcoming initiatives include Rotary Club and Action Day, along with continued support for literacy programs like the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. He urged members to get involved at the district level to expand Rotary’s reach even further.

Two of our own were also honored. JoEllen Brooks received the Dream Maker Award for her creative leadership in the Rotaryville fundraiser, including designing the event t-shirt. Unable to attend, she will be recognized at a future meeting. Laurie Edwards was named this year’s Quiet Rotarian for her many behind-the-scenes contributions, from managing our social media and website to publishing this very bulletin.

Governor Harvey’s visit was a reminder of the dreams Rotary can achieve when we work together—and the power of service to make those dreams come true.

Welcoming New Members and Celebrating Milestones
Our newest Red Badge Rotarians, corporate members from the Buckeye Union School District, were introduced at last week’s meeting with District Governor Larry Harvey. Camerado Middle School Assistant Principal Sara Matley and District Superintendent David Roth received their temporary red badges and a warm Rotary welcome.  Assistant Superintendent Jackie McKaney was also present, providing Membership Chair Anne Eckert with background information about David - all good of course!

Sara is the mother of three, an avid reader, and an enthusiastic spin class participant. David has two children—one attending Ponderosa High School and the other heading to Loyola University in Chicago. He enjoys backpacking and outdoor adventures with family and friends.

In addition, Kathy Thompson was awarded her Blue Badge, marking her quick completion of the Red Badge requirements. Kathy’s husband, Les, joined in the celebration and is pictured alongside her.  Kathy is a retired school teacher, and is the newest member on our scholarship committee.  She will also be involved in the dictionary project.

These members were congratulated by District Governor Larry Harvey, Area Governor Don Fuller, Membership Chair Anne Eckert, and President Adam Marshall.

This week President Adam called on Anne Eckert- to answer three questions so we could get to know her better and to “unite for good.”  Anne joined Rotary in March 2004, and her favorite Rotary moment is member involvement.  A fact that many members may not know- Anne does not like talking about herself.
