Last Meeting: Jan-13-2022,  Tom Elken's Vocation
Tom Elken talked about “A Vocation in Supercomputing & Performance Engineering.”  For the last 20 years of his career, he was involved with performance engineering and benchmarking of supercomputers and the high-speed networks that are the interconnect for a supercomputer.

To illustrate the progress in mathematical computing, he showed how the iPad of today is 50 times faster than the first Cray Research supercomputer.  He also showed how the Top 500 Supercomputers in the world are still getting faster at an exponential growth rate.  One way they do this is by adding processor cores.  The first supercomputer had one processing core; today's fastest, the Supercomputer Fugaku from Japan, has 7.6 million processor cores.

The talk concluded with a depiction of several applications, such as weather and climate prediction, airflow simulation, and vehicle crash simulation.  A member asked how the fastest supercomputer is being used, and another asked how large the rooms are to house these massive supercomputers.  Since I only guessed the answers to these questions on the 13th, I'll answer them now.  Any of these large supercomputers can be used for many different things, but one of the main uses for Fugaku is to address the COVID-19 pandemic.  In Japan, "The team is also working on a molecular simulation of how spiky coronaviruses attach to human cells — a valuable tool for diagnostics and drug discovery.  'This is not possible without supercomputers,' Matsuoka said. 'There is just no way you can take movies of how a virus attaches to a human cell.' "   The processing units of this supercomputer occupy a room that could comfortably fit two high school gyms -- see picture below right.
