Tim Hooey, Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator for the El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE), will share the department’s work including its support of school wellness centers, peer-to-peer program development, and mental health billing. The department was established in 2022; Tim joined the team in in 2023.
Previously, Tim practiced as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist on middle school and high school campuses. Life keeps him busy both at work and at home where he and his wife are raising four children, ages 16-20.
Last week’s presentation featured Morgen Earle and Matt Huckabay, who shared how the Center for Violence-Free Relationships supports the community by helping break the cycle of family violence.
Morgen, who brings a social media background with nearly one million followers, has served as the Center's Community Outreach Program Manager for the past three months. Matt is the Chief Executive Officer. Together, they outlined the agency’s mission: to guide families from crisis, to stability, and ultimately to thriving- a process that requires long-term commitment and work.
Clients connect with the Center through walk-ins, the Court system, or its 24/7 crisis line. Matt reported a 90% success rate among clients who remain in the program for a full year. A powerful video is shown of a client family sharing their multi- generational history of domestic violence and abuse, their involvement with CPS, and the hard work they've done at the Center to bring stability to their home. Through this support, the family has gained parenting skills to become more loving and supportive, breaking old patterns of anger and harm.
Reflecting on the video, Morgen noted is serves as a reminder that we are all human- we face challenges, make mistakes, can heal from trauma, and have the power to change what we don’t like about ourselves. Matt closed by answering questions and briefly sharing ways members can get involved in supporting the Center's mission.
Save the date! Join us on Sunday evening, October 19, for a private gathering of Rotarians, friends, and neighbors at the Observatory for pizza and fellowship, followed by an exciting evening of stargazing led by a talented team of dedicated docents. We'll also be welcoming Rotarians from the West Slope and the American River Rotary Club of Sacramento. The cost is $15 per person, with more details to come.
If the weather does not cooperate, the backup date will be October 26th.
Dick Marshall, Adam's father and visiting Rotarian from West Sacramento.
Bill Smyth, Visiting Rotarian from Palm Desert.
Morgen Earle and Matt Huckabay, Speakers.
Featured Rotarian:
This week President Adam invited Don Mai to answer a few questions so we could get to know him better as we “Unite for Good.” As a light-hearted introduction, Adam jokingly referred to Don as our "internationally known dog handler," teasing him about his recent bite breaking up a dog fight. Don shared that he joined Rotary in 1971, and his favorite Rotary moment was the year he completed his term as president.
Announcements:
Adam Marshall:
Emphasizes need for club bulletin editor. Please volunteer.
The REGL camp (eight grade leadership course) kicks off tomorrow. Adam’s 13 year old son is one of four Camerado students participating in the camp.
Congratulates Don Fuller and Sabrina Ho on their birthdays.
Volunteers are needed from October 16-20 for Three’s Strands’ Break Free Run- it raises awareness about Child Human Trafficking.
Rotary and Friends Night at the Observatory is October 19.
Marlyn Pino-Jones: Annual Christmas Party and Auction is December 4 at the Country Club. We need gift cards for the cookie jar, along with raffle and live auction items.
Don Fuller:
Be thinking of guests to invite for our upcoming social events on October 19, October 30 and December 4.
We need to highlight the wide variety of world-class leadership training that Rotary offers- opportunities that can benefit people not only in service but also in their own careers. Keep this in mind when attracting new members, remembering that it's about attraction, not recruiting- as described by Dr. Bill Wittich. Dr Wittich is scheduled to speak at our January 15 meeting.
Cathy Dugan: We have a couple of community service opportunities coming up. We can take part in the EDC Foundation's coat drive by being a collection center. Once again, we can support King's Meat's Turkey Drive by donating cash or pledging turkeys. Stay tuned for more details.
Gary Clarke: This Tuesday is "Teamster's Tuesday," taking bicycles from the Collection Center to Folsom Prison, and to Sacramento. More pickup trucks are needed.
Gina Posey: The Shingle Springs Community Center is having bunco night on Friday, October 17 with a Halloween theme. Thanks club for donation of refurbished bicycle for the event.
Happy (or Not) Bucks
Marlyn Pino-Jones: $25 happy to get her passport in time for her Mexico trip. A delay was caused due to an issue with her check. She abbreviated the word, “department”- lesson learned.
Kathy Thompson: $10 happy because the dictionaries have arrived. Distribution will begin in the first week of October. She will have a signup list available at our next meeting.
Bill Smyth: $5 happy (cash) for a trip he and Kelly are taking to Australia, Singapore, and Indonesia, and for being given a refund on their Global Entry applications because their credit card covered the costs.
Dave Sargent: $10 happy for being so pleased with the prompt services Shawn Khales provides as treasurer.
Don Fuller: $20 happy because Adam noted that he (Don) turns 21 on Saturday. Don is also happy to serve as a mentor for this weekend’s REGL camp.
Gina Posey -$5 happy for the Shingle Spring’s Community Center passing the first inspection on a recent plumbing and electrical restroom upgrade.
Sid Bazett - $10 happy that Shawn Khales is now a member of the CSD Architectural Review Committee.
Adam Marshall - $6 happy because Rotarians love each other. He moved 2 chairs from each table before the meeting, and members moved them back indicating there were not enough chairs at each table.
