Next Meeting:  Aug 25-2022: David Sargent -- Cameron Park Rotary Community Foundation

Our speaker will be our very own Dave Sargent.  Dave will highlight the work of the Cameron Park Rotary Community Foundation.  This is our foundation, and it is doing a lot of good work that we should all be proud of, and we all should be “tooting our horn” throughout the community about the contribution we’re making to youth and adults through the educational grants.   So don’t miss it.     See you Thursday!

Last Meeting: Aug-18-2022: Sheriff-elect Jeff Leikauf
Sheriff-Elect Jeff Leikauf gave a presentation that demonstrated his passion for doing the right thing to protect residents of El Dorado County. Focused on the issue of homelessness, he identified several abandoned homeless sites in Cameron Park.  He explained that homelessness is one of the bigger problems in the county; it often leads to theft in the area and that fire danger is a serious concern at the encampments.   The Sheriff’s Office works with other agencies to help the homeless obtain services; however sometimes it is necessary to use the law to hold people accountable, such as those who chose to remain homeless and refuse services.   In addition, he shared his thoughts regarding a 60-bed hub center for the homeless planned for the Missouri Flat Corridor.

The Sheriff’s Office organizes community cleanups at some of the abandoned encampments; three have occurred and one is scheduled for September 10th in Cameron Park.  One goal is to keep the areas from being re-populated so HOT (Homeless Outreach Team) does follow up.  Leikauf believes adding public trails would also help prevent camps from returning but this may not be possible due to the endangered plant species at the sites.

Leikauf reports the new substation in Cameron Park has already had a positive impact in the community. Now the sheriff’s office is looking for the “right” helicopter to help with Search and Rescue, assist deputies and fire abatement. Regarding staffing, all new hires (sworn and non-sworn) must pass a strict background check for employment. The office is proud hiring “the best of the best;”—only 1.9% out of every 100 applicants make the grade.

When asked about the Uvalde shootings, Leikauf reassured all that the creed of the office is that the first responder is tasked with immediately eliminating the threat—“we do not wait,” he said.   Lastly, he reported that the Sheriff’s office and other first responders have ongoing active-shooter training at our local schools.

Announcements:

Don Fuller:  On Sept. 1, DG Jeff Gabriel will visit the club.  The schedule for that day is roughly as follows:  10:00 am - Board Meeting,  Noon - Club Meeting followed by visits to Christa McAuliffe Park and at the Community Observatory, and 5:30 pm - Social at Los Pinos.  He hinted that the #2 shovel may make an appearance. Don encourages members to attend the luncheon and evening social. Still looking for a Rotarian to host DG Gabriel and his wife.

Don also asked members to sign up for the front desk, greeter and words of wisdom assignments.

Laurie Edwards: The 111th Annual RI Convention is being held May 28-31 in Melbourne, Australia.  Howard Tours is arranging pre and post tours in Australia and New Zealand. If interested, see Laurie for Howard Tours contact info.

Laurie is also compiling the history of our observatory.  If you would like to add input or review, please contact her.

Dave Sargent:  5 Rotarians have signed up for the Nicaragua project support trip from October 30 to November 9.  There is still a week to sign up if you wish to participate.

Steve Long:   1) This Tuesday morning at 9:45 am is the next bicycle haul to the prison from the waste facility.  Another truck or trailer is needed.  If you can help, please contact Steve.

                        2)  Please also sign up for the dictionary project and list the dates best for your participation.  It is anticipated we will start distributing dictionaries to students in the first part of October.

                        3) (Post-meeting announcement)  Steve spoke with President Don Fuller about having a work party of our members participate in the Cameron Park clean-up day described by Jeff Leikauf. This would be a community improvement activity which will not cost the Club any money. Steve is guessing there will be media coverage which will be good advertising for CP Rotary, especially if we wear our Rotary shirts, hats, etc.  Don agreed. The event will start at the east end of Palmer Drive just past Ponte Palmero Senior facility at 7:30 AM on Saturday, September 10. There will be coffee and snacks provided by a couple of Cameron Park businesses.
Anybody planning to attend should bring a shovel, rake, etc. and gloves. Steve will distribute a sign-up sheet at the 8/25 meeting.

Marlyn Pino-Jones:  On August 25, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, there will be a ground breaking ceremony for the Emergency Resource Center at the Food Bank in the Business Park.  All are invited.
