Stories
This Week: Apr-21-2022: John Sanders, Chef & Owner of Old Town Grill
John Sanders was born and raised in the Bay Area until his family moved to Sacramento when he was 12.  By the time he was 10, he knew he was going to become a chef.  He explains, “A life of service is what our Good Lord designed for me, service through food.” In 2018, the City of Placerville honored him for his service to others and the community with a proclamation.  For the same reasons, he was selected Grand Marshal of the Hangtown Christmas Parade in 2021.

John has been in food industry for 46 years, and met his wife, Debbi, at work in Sacramento.  They opened their first restaurant in 1985, Bountiful Harvest Café & Catering in Sacramento.  John went on to be the Executive Chef for the Sacramento Kings for ten years before he left the position in 2001 so he and Debbi could open their restaurant, Old Town Grill, on Main Street, Placerville.  This year they are celebrating 21 years on Main Street.

John’s topic -  “We all have an opportunity and responsibility to make a difference using our God given gifts through our time, our talents and our treasures.  Our past creates each of our individual personal stories.”

Last Week:  Apr-14-2022: Tracey Fremd, EAA of Placerville
Tracey Fremd is not a pilot but has been involved in aviation for most of her life.  Currently she is the fund-raising liaison of The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 512 of Placerville.  Experimental aircraft are amateur-built aircraft that are licensed and approved by the FAA for private use.  Tracey encouraged us to, at least once in your life, go to the EAA once-yearly national fly-in called EAA Airventure Oshkosh; this year it is July 25-31.

The EAA Placerville Chapter is active with youth to encourage a love of aviation.  They offer a free "Young Eagle Flight" to children from 8-17 years of age.  This event happens twice a year, and last year they hosted more than 50 flights to youth in our community. These rides are scheduled for 6/11 and 10/8 this year.

One of Tracey's main interests is in raising funds for scholarships to enable youth to complete flight or other aviation training school.  The Ray Aviation Scholarship is a $10,000 award funded by the national EAA organization.  In the fall of 1999, Placerville Chapter 512 established the Sunny Atkins Scholarship fund to be awarded to an El Dorado County resident to aid in furthering his or her aviation career. The mission of the EAA Chapter 512 Scholarship Committee is to provide an El Dorado County resident with an educational, aviation career scholarship and to provide a support network to all scholarship candidates.  Last year three of these $5,000 awards were made locally, and that amount is matched by the national organization.  In all, last year the EAA awarded over $1M in scholarship money.

The chapter also awards post-secondary scholarships for aeronautical engineering, aviation management and airframe and powerplant maintenance.

For more information on contributing to these scholarships, please contact Tracey Fremd at mobile: 916-220-6620 or email: t.fremd@comcast.net.

Don Fuller:
1)
We are working towards a WineFest fundraiser at the ED County Fair in Placerville on June 16-19.  He is putting together a committee for planning the event.  If you are interested, let Don know.  Also, we will be looking forward to participation by all members to volunteer hours at the Wine Bar during the Fair.
2) Our friend and fellow member, Andrew Davis is moving out of the area and our club.  Thus, we are in need of a new Youth Chairman.  If you are interested in serving in such a capacity, let Don know.
3) We will be soon starting a tree planting project at Christa McAuliffe Park in Cameron Park.  Joe Ryan is working with the CSD's Park Director on the details.  We will be planting 18 trees and spreading bark on April 28th.  The cost is $4700 of which there is a district grant providing $2,501.
