Tracey Fremd is not a pilot but has been involved in aviation for most of her life. Currently she is the fund-raising liaison of The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 512 of Placerville. Experimental aircraft are amateur-built aircraft that are licensed and approved by the FAA for private use. Tracey encouraged us to, at least once in your life, go to the EAA once-yearly national fly-in called EAA Airventure Oshkosh; this year it is July 25-31. The EAA Placerville Chapter is active with youth to encourage a love of aviation. They offer a free "Young Eagle Flight" to children from 8-17 years of age. This event happens twice a year, and last year they hosted more than 50 flights to youth in our community. These rides are scheduled for 6/11 and 10/8 this year. One of Tracey's main interests is in raising funds for scholarships to enable youth to complete flight or other aviation training school. The Ray Aviation Scholarship is a $10,000 award funded by the national EAA organization. In the fall of 1999, Placerville Chapter 512 established the Sunny Atkins Scholarship fund to be awarded to an El Dorado County resident to aid in furthering his or her aviation career. The mission of the EAA Chapter 512 Scholarship Committee is to provide an El Dorado County resident with an educational, aviation career scholarship and to provide a support network to all scholarship candidates. Last year three of these $5,000 awards were made locally, and that amount is matched by the national organization. In all, last year the EAA awarded over $1M in scholarship money. The chapter also awards post-secondary scholarships for aeronautical engineering, aviation management and airframe and powerplant maintenance.
