Next Meeting:  Aug 11-2022: Guy Nixon tells Native American Stories

Guy Nixon’s grandfather heard many stories from old men at the sawmill and he passed that oral tradition on to Guy. In El Dorado in 1974, Guy also heard stories from his Sunday School teacher, Mertile Schuster, an 87-year-old Miwok. Guy’s father was also a fertile source of stories that he heard from old folks on various ranches. The sound of his dad’s Model T Ford would bring out memories that they had.  His dad also recorded various stories on a camcorder.

After his stint in the Navy, Guy and his Dad started to research these stories. He found Mr. Peabody from Hanks Exchange who had also collected stories. He and Guy worked together often, to unify multiple versions of the same story because every telling had additional details the others may have lacked.  As a result of collecting all these stories, Guy wrote 14 books and told stories on the Sierra Community Access Channel 2 TV shows and YouTube. His effort has been to preserve the history by correlating these stories with broader, related events. Guy tries to put the events and decisions into the context of what was happening around those folks and the factors that contributed to what they did. Guy hopes we enjoy his presentation, get some questions answered, and enjoy the get-together.

Last Meeting: Aug-04-2022: Colette Thiel, SS/CP Chamber of Commerce
Colette Thiel, President/Broker of Thiel Real Estate and her husband, Michael, are leading experts in residential real estate sales and property management in El Dorado, Sacramento, Placer, Ventura, and LA Counties.  They maintain a strong reputation for providing superior customer service. They have been married for 32 years and have 3 adult children, 2 daughters-in-law, 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter.

The SS/CP Chamber of Commerce was initially founded as the Shingle Springs Business and Professional Association, Inc. in December of 1967, two years before our Rotary Club. During the 2020-2021 pandemic, the SS/CP Chamber of Commerce was dark for quite a few months; then they met on Zoom for Happy Hour events.

In 2022, Colette was installed as the President of the Shingle Springs Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce.  The Chamber had more than 400 members in the 1980s and has around 200 now.  Colette is looking to build the membership.  New businesses are moving into Burke Junction that could become members.  Colette also volunteers on the Ambassador Committee that works to build membership.  Membership dues range from $50 for individuals and $125 for non-profits up to $350 for businesses with more than 50 employees.

The major fundraiser for the Chamber is "Thunder in the Park", a car show that had more than 135 vehicles last year.  She encourages us to attend on 10/1/22 at the Cameron Park Lake.  For more information or to register, check out this link. The SS/CP Chamber has not asked for Transient Occupancy Tax money from the County yet, but will coincident with the start of the next two-year cycle.  This will be a significant, new source of funds for the Chamber.  The members appreciated Colette's talk and Cathy Dugan complimented Colette on the Chamber's FaceBook page.
