This Week:  Ju1-14-2022: Steve Long on Superior Fruit Ranch

Steve’s father was raised in New York City and his mother in Ceres, CA. Though both had college degrees, they ended up living on a farm in Ceres where Steve attended elementary through high school. Being raised on a farm, Steve had lots of practical lessons; in addition, he earned an AA business degree which he put to good use.  As a kid, he raised and sold vegetables, and learned to cut fruit for a dehydrator operation. His talk will be about the history of Superior Fruit Ranch which was so much a part of his life. It has been in continual operation in Stanislaus County, CA for over 100 years.

At 20 years old, Steve got married to Judy, earned a real estate license and worked with his father in real estate and insurance. He moved on to technical and management training through Pacific Bell and then worked for them for 31 years: in business marketing in several locations including Travis Air Force base and San Francisco, and eventually was an Engineering manager in Sacramento. With his extensive experience in real estate, he became Executive Director of the El Dorado County Economic Development Corporation from 1993 to 1994, and then Real Estate consultant with Overland, Pacific & Cutler, Inc. from 1995 to 2014.

Steve was always involved his community. He served on the Cameron Park CSD Board from 1975 – 1983, on the Buckeye Union School District Board 1977 – 1981 and on the El Dorado County Civil Services Commission 1981 – 1992. Steve joined Cameron Park Rotary in 1992 and has been Treasurer, President, and Assistant District Governor.

Last Meeting: Jul-07-2022: Don Fuller, Our 2022-2023 Club President
President Don Fuller has been a member of the Rotary Club of Cameron Park since 2011 and has served as Treasurer, Vice President, and Foundation Chair.   Don is excited about the opportunity to serve the club as president and looks forward to engaging all the members in service, fellowship, and fun.

During this program, Don outlined his vision and goals for the club and upcoming year.    He also listed the Board of Directors, his lieutenants who will help accomplish the goals for the year:  VP – Jim Buckley; Secretary – Bill Ettlich; Treasurer – Janet Yarbough; Membership – Anne Eckert; Community Service  - Joe Ryan; International – Dave Sargent; Past President and Sgt at Arms – Mike Dugan; Club Service/Meeting Programs -- Marlyn Pino-Jones with Mike Dugan; Rotary Foundation -- Laurie Edwards; President-Elect – TBD; and Youth Services - TBD

Don's vision for the year included three items: more fun; more engagement; and more members.  As an example of More Fun, Don noted that a lot of members really enjoyed donating their time for the WineFest because they got to spend a lot of quality time with other members that they had not talked in depth with for a long time.   To accomplish More Engagement, Don listed the following: 1) Rebuild Interact Club at Ponderosa High; 2) More engagement with local groups such as the CP/SS Chamber of Commerce and the CP CSD; 3) Continuation of the Sunshine Club efforts of Cathy Dugan plus others; 4) More Social Media promotion of our projects; and 5) Engage the club & community in a Public Service Day.  To attract More Members, with more age and gender diversity, Don had us list people that we would try to encourage to attend a meeting as a guest and encouraged us to carry that list in our wallets.  One member listed 9 potential guests/new-members and won a bottle of Crystal Basin Renegade Red for her efforts!

New Member Sid Bazett
Membership Chair Anne Eckert and President Don welcomed Sid Bazett as a new red badge member of Rotery Club of Cameron Park.  Sid's guest Sharon Nelson was there to cheer him on.  Anne read "The Object of Rotary" and listed some of the activities that Sid will be working on to complete the requirements of a full Blue-Badge member of the club.  Sid has already been involved in some Club projects, like WineFest and he mentioned that his dad's Rotary membership was part of what led him to make the jump into our Rotary club.  We all give Sid a warm welcome!
