This week we welcome District 5190 Governor Larry Harvey who will share his vision for the Rotary year and celebrate our club’s accomplishments. His theme, “Make Dreams Come True,” highlights the power of Rotary to turn ideas into reality through Service. Governor Harvey is committed to ensuring every club has the resources and support needed to achieve its goals in our community and beyond.
About Larry:
Larry has more than 35 years of experience in human resources and risk management, including leadership roles at John Ascuaga’s Nugget, Click Bond (aerospace manufacturing) and the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority. Now semi-retired, he runs Cultural Guide, LLC, offering coaching and cultural development for non-profits and businesses.
A Rotarian since 2002 with the Rotary Club of Sparks, Larry served as Club President in 2011-2012, and has held a variety of district and zone leadership roles. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow, a Paul Harris Society member, a Polio Plus Society member, a Bequest Society member, and recently became a Major Donor II.
Dr. Jay Feldman, PhD. began his talk by introducing his wife, Jolene, who also works for NASA, before giving a brief overview of NASA’s mission and structure, along with his own professional background.
Dr. Feldman captivated the audience with a look inside NASA’s groundbreaking heat-shield innovations, supported by short video clips. These technologies span missions like: Perseverance (sending robots to Mars), Artemis/Orion (returning humans to the Moon), and Da Vinci (probing Venus’s atmosphere).
Dr. Feldman leads the team behind 3D-MAT—a 3-dimensional, woven ablative and structural heat-shield material that flew on the Orion spacecraft during Artemis I. This innovation won NASA’s 2023 Invention of the Year Award. He emphasized that 3D-MAT’s unique woven design will be vital for upcoming missions, including Mars Sample Return and Venus exploration. As a go-to expert on thermal protection, Dr. Feldman continues to shape the future of deep-space missions.
