Next Week: May-19-2022: PDG Wyn Spiller, Standing Together - Disaster Response at Home and Around the World
PDG Wyn Spiller will talk to us about disaster response locally and around the world.  Specifically, she will include the district's fire response, Ukraine and a new district grant funded project focused on support and rescue of Afghan families left behind following the collapse of the government in 2021.

Wyn joined the Rotary Club of Grass Valley in 1994 and has served in a variety of club, District and Zone roles including District 5190 Governor 2008-09. She is the immediate past District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair, a past Zone 27 Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator and is honored to be currently serving as the Zone 27 Endowment/Major Gifts Adviser, the Rotary International 2022 Council on Legislation Trainer and the Chair of the newly formed D5190 Disaster Response Committee.

Wyn and her husband Steve share a deep commitment to our Rotary Foundation and its humanitarian work, including a special interest in the Rotary Peace Centers and Polio eradication.  They are Major Donors as well as Paul Harris, PolioPlus, Triple Crown and Bequest Society members. Wyn is the proud recipient of The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service.
Last Week:  May 12-2022: Lao Family Community Development Speakers
Shafiullah Hatak R&P Program manager and Michaela Prothe, Job Developer of the Lao Family Community Development (LFCD) spoke to us last week since a last-minute conflict made it impossible for CEO Kathy Chao Rothberg to attend.  Both were informative and entertaining speakers.

Shafiullah was born in Afghanistan and, as a high school graduate, served as an interpreter for the U.S. Armed Forces starting in 2006.  It was a high-risk job and in 2008 he lost two of his team members.  In 2014 he went to the USA on a special immigration visa (SIV) with his wife and daughter.  That gave him first-hand experience on what it's like to be a refugee trying to set down roots in the US.  Initially, it was a struggle just to leave the apartment and do some shopping.  In 20017 Kathy Chao found him and convinced him to take a job settling refugees.  When Shafiullah was settling in the US, he got $600 in financial assistance and hi rent was $750.  Today, people can get $800 in assistance, but rent costs $1700/mo. -- much more challenging.

Some statistics: - In the last 5 years, LFCD has resettled 2,017 people and provided services to 31,000 people per year and 8,000 of those get resettlement money.  LACD offices have slowly been moving eastward.  Today their offices are at 3205 Hurley Way near two large Ukranian communities and they have a connection with Highland Charter School, where LACD sends adults so they can enter a H.S. degree program.  Their current refugees have a need for 80-100 bicycles to have transportation to their initial job and for temporary housing.

Michaela Prothe spoke about how she helps line up jobs for refugees served by LACD.  Some employers get reimbursed for hiring a refugee during the first 6 months of employment.  Michaela serves as an intermediary between a family case manager and the employer.  Michaela also has helped several employers set up job fairs.  LFCD knows that finding a job -- often 2 jobs per family -- is critical in successfully resettling someone in Northern California.

LFCD left each of us with a professional and informative folder containing several brochures about their services, and the business cards of the two speakers.  It looks like a partnership between them and our club could bear fruit in several areas.
