Next Meeting,  Feb 18, 2021:  James L'Etoile -  Best Selling Author
From prison to the page: Author James L’Etoile discusses a second career as a bestselling author and what draws him to write crime fiction set in our local area.

James L’Etoile uses his twenty-nine years behind bars as an influence in his novels, short stories, and screenplays. He is a former associate warden in a maximum-security prison, a hostage negotiator, facility captain, and director of California’s state parole system. He is a nationally recognized expert witness on prison and jail operations. He has been nominated for the Silver Falchion for Best Procedural Mystery, and The Bill Crider Award for short fiction. His published novels include: At What Cost, Bury the Past, and Little River -The Other Side of Paradise. Look for Black Label in the summer of 2021 from Level Best Books. Last Meeting, Feb 04, 2021: PDG Roger Hassler on Rotary Foundation

PDG Roger Hassler spoke to us about the Rotary Foundation, which transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.  Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.

Roger related that Rotary Foundation is personally among his top charitable giving priorities for these reasons:

  • Rotary is ranked near the top of all charities ranked by Charity Navigator.
  • The Foundation allows donors to decide where the money goes, especially by writing requests for grants.
  • The Foundation holds the money for 3 or more years to grow before the money is used
  • 92% of the donations come back in terms of grants, a really high percentage compared to other charities.
Some of our projects that were enabled by Community Grants from the Rotary Foundation are: 1) The Sky Theatre at the Community Observatory, 2) The Shingle Springs Soccer Field, 3) Schools in Central America and 4) the Sport Field at a Nicaraguan village.  The Initiatives of RI for the Foundation are:  Water & Sanitation; Education; Disease Control and Inoculation; and Environmental Protection.

Thank you, Roger, for your service and for inspiring us to give generously to our Rotary Foundation.

Announcements:

Dave Sargent:  Details about our fund-raiser dinner are emerging.  March 17, St. Patrick's Day is our current target.  We are working with two Cameron Park restaurants -- Papa Gianni's and Los Pinos Mexican Restaurant -- on choices for the meals that participants will drive to pick up on the event day.  The event will be addressing food insecurity in EDC, perhaps by encouraging food or monetary donations curbside when picking up your meals.  We are working with an online event planner to handle payments of $55 per dinner.  We are inviting other clubs and organizations and urge members to invite their friends.

President Mike Dugan provided an update on the bicycle project, which is now on hold due to many inmates being shipped out of Folsom Prison due to the pandemic.

Laurie Edwards informed us of future speakers:   On Saturday Feb. 13 at 8:45 am, members who have signed up, can watch Incoming President of RI, Jennifer Jones speak to our district over Zoom.  She is reputed to be an excellent and motivational speaker.  At our next meeting, Feb. 18, James L'Etoile, will be speaking to us about "From Prison to the Page: James discusses his Second Career as a Bestselling Author".
