Foundation Dinner: Mar-23-2023;  Dark for Luncheon Meeting
In the March 16 meeting, Prez Don reminded us that there is no luncheon meeting at the Cameron Park Country Club on March 23rd. This is to encourage more members to attend the Area Foundation Dinner at the Apple Mountain Golf Resort at 6pm.  One of the speakers will be "Morotcycle Bob" Mutchler, an inspiring speaker who was afflicted with Polio, but still rides his bike to tirelessly raise funds for Rotary's Polio Plus program to eradicate polio forever.
Laurie Edwards wrote an email about new recommended route to get to the Apple Mountain Golf Resort:  After driving east on US 50 towards Tahoe,
  • Turn right onto Camino Heights Drive
  • Take the first left onto Sierra Blanca Drive then a quick right onto Golden Chain Drive for 120’.
  • Turn left onto Pondorado Road and at the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit onto Carson Ct.
  • Go under the freeway then turn right on Carson Rd.  In about 2 blocks on the left, you’ll come to the big sign for the resort.  Turn left onto Apple Mountain Resort Drive and follow the road about a mile to the resort.
Last Meeting, Mar-16-2023, Rafael Martinez, EDC Director of Transportation

Rafael Martinez is the Director of Transportation (DOT) for El Dorado County. He has a Civil Engineering degree from Cal Poly University and a Traffic Engineering license in California. Rafael has worked for over 24 years in the transportation field in both the public and private sectors.

Rafael gave us a far-ranging overview of the work of the county's DOT as well as the main issues on the horizon.  The Maintenance and Operations Dept. sees after road maintenance, including bridges and culverts,car/truck fleet purchase and repairs, snow removal; traffic engineering, emergency management, and a big, new responsibility of vegetation management.  The latter generally means removing vegetation within road right-of-ways. 50% of the DOT budget in South Lake Tahoe is for snow removal and it is going to go higher than that this year.

In the capital project areas, the beautiful new Mosquito Bridge under construction was designed locally, but 100% of the funding came from  Federal grants.  This will replace the current one-lane bridge that required annual maintenance and would be a hazard in case of a wildfire.
