Next Meeting: Jul-07-2022: Don Fuller, Our 2022-2023 Club President
President Don Fuller has been a member of the Rotary Club of Cameron Park since 2011 and has served as Treasurer, Vice President, and Foundation Chair.   Don is excited about the opportunity to serve the club as president and looks forward to engaging all the members in service, fellowship, and fun.  On July 7, Don will outline his vision and goals for the club and upcoming year.

Don retired in 2020 after 48 years in the electrical industry with Westinghouse and the California Independent System Operator managing the high-voltage grid.  He enjoys golf, woodworking, and photography, including aerial photography.  Don and his wife Linda live in Shingle Springs.  Linda operates a flower business and they both operate a candy business that makes and sells delicious English toffee.   Both are graduates of the esteemed Oregon State University (Go Beavers)!

Last Week:  Jun-30-2022: Mike and Cathy Dugan: Aviator Kennel's Portuguese Water Dogs

Mike and Cathy Dugan have been breeding purebred dogs since 1987, first with Dalmatians and then exclusively with Portuguese Water Dogs for the last 25 years. They are AKC Breeders of Merit - Platinum (over 150 AKC champions and over 220 champions worldwide). They were honored as the AKC Working Breeders of the year in 2021 in the U.S. They previously were honored as the Breeders Showcase Winner (top breeders all breeds) in 2009 in a competition of 300 breeders from around the world. They have raised 600 puppies have placed them all over the world. They are still active breeders and considered one of the top working dog breeders in the US.

Mike and Cathy introduced their two beautiful dogs: JJ and Juno. Mike reminded us that the business of raising puppies is hard work and that with their adult dogs in the home it is inevitable that they pass away but the joy when they are there and the cycle of raising them is worth it.

Cathy explained that Portuguese Water dogs were originally working dogs on fishing boats due to their webbed feet, black skin (protection from the sun) and swimming prowess. Their black coat is hair, not fur, and since they have no undercoat, they don’t really shed. Therefore, they are excellent for people with allergies. JJ & Juno were sporting what is called a “lion cut” which makes it easier to swim in the ocean. Mike and Cathy explained that in the 1960’s, the line almost became extinct, but breeders worked together to re-introduce the line. The Cintron and Cabral lineages of PWD are kept apart to maintain the purity.  One of their dogs, LadyBug, was top in the country and is ancestor to Juno. Mike and Cathy have worked closely with UC Davis for over 20 years aiding in research to breed out a variety of diseases from the line. Also, the dogs were originally “brawlers” but have been tamed down for the comforts of dogs and owners.

Mike and Cathy explained a little about how dog shows work, pointing out that owners have to win a lot of shows before qualifying for one of the big shows such as the Westminster show. Only one show, the National Championship in Orlando awards a monetary prize-- $50,000! Otherwise, it is ribbons and notoriety. It was clear that Portuguese Water Dogs are very special—smart, strong, and loving and can be trained for almost anything.
