Stories
This Week:  Apr-28-2022: Dave and Carol Sargent: Stories and Images from Kenya
Dave and Carol Sargent will report on their third safari trip to Africa. They hope to provide a feeling for the experience that is Africa, as a whole, and, in particular, observing game in its own habitat. They will do that through stories and slides of experiences with countless types of animals. An added feature will be some videos of animal behaviors that couldn't be captured on still photos.

This photo was taken at Tortillis camp in Kenya's Amboselli National Park, on the Amboselli plains in front of a passing family of elephants with Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background.

Last Week: Apr-21-2022: John Sanders, Chef & Owner of Old Town Grill
John Sanders was born and raised in the Bay Area until his family moved to Sacramento when he was 12.  By the time he was 10, he knew he was going to become a chef.  He explains, “A life of service is what our Good Lord designed for me, service through food.”  John was the Executive Chef for the Sacramento Kings for ten years before he left the position in 2001 so he and wife Debbi could open their restaurant, Old Town Grill, on Main Street, Placerville.  This year they are celebrating 21 years on Main Street.

John went into some detail on his colorful childhood in which he called himself a numbskull and worse.  Despite a lot of trouble due to gangs, drugs and alcohol, his passion for food kept him going.  Finally, he realized that he had to stop his addictions to achieve his dreams in the food industry.  These days, he takes kids on as employees who have been in foster care or other difficult situations.  He gave a boy named Anton a shot, and now he is able to run the Restaurant while John slips away to do things like speaking to our club.  Anton has just started at the Culinary Academy in Sacramento and is well on his way to success.  He hired a boy named Thomas who had been through 7 foster homes.  After two years he has learned that the restaurant business is not for him, but he went on to a job at Walmart.  That was not a fit either, and after 4 months, he has a job as a counselor at New Morning, which provides transitional housing, and he loves that job.

When COVID hit in March 2020, John's restaurant started a Curbside with a Cause promotion.  Each Friday night a different non-profit would share the profits from that evening.  He was selling 200-225 meals a night with that approach.  John believes we all have an opportunity and responsibility to make a difference using our God given gifts through our time, our talents and our treasures.  Our past creates each of our individual personal stories.
