Next Meeting, Apr-20-2023: Col. Adam Marshall, Experiences in Europe related to the Ukraine War
Colonel Marshall is the Director of Operations (A3), HQ Hawaii Air National Guard, Fort Ruger, Hawaii.  Colonel Marshall graduated with a History degree from the University of Washington and was commissioned through the ROTC program in 1998. As the A3, he is responsible for operations spanning Air Dominance, Aerial Refueling, Airlift, Space Electronic Warfare, Operational C2, Air Defense, and Cyber missions including the Nation’s largest ANG Wing; ensuring ready, relevant, and resilient airmen are poised to support US Indo-Pacific Command, Pacific Air Forces, and the State of Hawaii.

Adam Marchall was mobilized 18 days after the invasion of Ukraine and spent 6 months in Europe as the Vice Commander of the Air Operations Center there. The team was responsible for all of Europe (Russia and Ukraine included) as well as all of Africa. Quite the adventure that Adam was lucky enough to be a part of, and will speak about.
Last Meeting, Apr-13-2023, Mike Owen, Owner, Crystal Basin Cellars
Mike Owen is a native of El Dorado County, a graduate of El Dorado High School. His wife Melissa graduated from Ponderosa. He spent several years in the Bay area working in high tech before he came back to the area to work in his first love, wine making and agriculture. He is the president of the El Dorado Farm Trails Association and is the owner and wine master at Crystal Basin Winery in Camino. He explained that the El Dorado wine appellation is based on wines grown above 1,200 feet while wines made below that are called Sierra Foothills. Other appellations such as Fair Play are officially recognized as designations that describe areas of wine production that produce wines of a particular style and type of wines.

El Dorado County has about 3,000 acres of wine production today which is about the same as wine production during the Gold Rush. While Eldorado wines are exceptional, the value compared to Napa are very different. A ton of wine grapes from Napa is worth about $11,000, while a ton from our area is only $1,800; a reflection of the value of land in the two counties.

Today, the county has expanded from wine production to other agricultural uses such as Apple Hill. Mike and his family lived in France for over two years and host an annual River Cruise for Wine Lovers. The one scheduled for 2024 is "The Essence of Burgandy and Provence", traveling from Arles in southern France to Dijon. His wines carry a distinct French style.
