 Member Sid Bazett and friend Sharon Nelson related the excitement and uniqueness of their cruise on the Nile and tours of nearby cities and archeological sites. At the left is the Nile at Aswan. Among the first pictures that SId showed were of the massive Nasser Lake and of Aswan Dam which formed the Lake. They took a week-long Nile cruise through Vantage Deluxe World Travel (a company no longer in business). Views on the large river were ever-changing, from vendors in boats that pulled alongside to beautiful sailboats. Impressions of Cairo, a city of 11 million people: The military and police look very well cared-for, making Sid and Sharon feel safe. In Cairo, you need to be married to get an apartment, and the husband needs to pay. There were beautiful mosques and churches in Cairo. Near Cairo was Giza, home of the Great Pyramids and Sphinx. They heard that the Sphinx is missing its nose because Napolean's army used it as a target for artillery practice. The oldest pyramid was 5,000 years old. They were also able to see the beautiful chair of King Tut in Giza. Cairo was very smoggy and they did a lot of their touring early in the day to avoid some of the smog. They then flew from Cairo to Luxor, near the Valley of the Kings. There, they were able to see the tomb of King Tutankhamen among many others. They were amazed that this many years later, the indoor paintings and mosaics in the tombs were still vivid with color, thousands of years later. With some of the artwork, the artists carved into the rock to give a 3D effect to their work. Sid is a boating fan, and he got a tour of the helm of their cruise ship. Sid was amazed that there was no radar or depth finder to assist the captain. The captain just used his lifelong experience with the Nile and knowledge gained from his father and grandfather to navigate the shifting shoals of the river. We all greatly enjoyed our virtual adventure, visiting the Nile with Sid Bazett and Sharon Nelson! |
District Governor Stacy Graham joined Auburn Daybreak Rotary in 2000, which transitioned into Sierra Passport Rotary in 2017 and in 2018 she transferred to Auburn Gold Country Rotary. At the Club level, Stacy has held may chair positions and leadership roles, but none has given her more satisfaction and joy as Club President.
