Next Meeting: Sep-15-2022: Dan Corcoran, EID Director of Operations
Dan Corcoran is EID’s director of operations. For the past two decades, Dan has advised water and power utilities across California, including supporting district operations since 2004. He has developed an intimate knowledge of EID’s water, wastewater, recycled water, hydroelectric generation, and recreation operations during his time as EID’s environmental and water resources manager, and carries this forward to his current role that he started in 2018.

A native of eastern Sacramento County, Dan holds a degree in wildlife, fish, and conservation biology from the University of  California, Davis. Dan and his wife and their two children live on property in Shingle Springs with a variety of companion pets where he also enjoys working on their family property in his free time.

Given the severe and ongoing drought our County, and California, have been experiencing, Dan's program will be especially relevant and timely.
Last Meeting:  Sep-08-2022: Tim Pinkney, NASA Ambassador

“The Webb Space Telescope – Transforming our Understanding of the Universe”

CP CSD GM Andre Pichly introduced speaker Tim Pinkney.  Tim, a NASA Solar System Ambassador, gave a fascinating presentation providing details of the James Webb Space Telescope and the spellbinding images that it is sending back to earth from which fascinating new scientific insights are being derived.  Tim has been a NASA Solar Ambassador since 2016, Tim has giving over 100 presentations to community and civic groups. He was the former Aerospace Museum of California’s interim Deputy Director in 2017/18, after being on their Board of Directors for 10 years.

Tim provided us: 1) a re-education on the electromagnetic spectrum, 2) why telescopes can be viewed as time machines, 3) the goals of the James Webb Space Telescope, and 4) the awesome images from the Webb telescope and some of what has been learned from them.  The emphasis on the electromagnetic spectrum was primarily because the Webb telescope detects infrared light, which enables it to better "see" through dust clouds in outer space.  The sensitivity of the telescope is such that it could detect the infrared warmth given off by a bumblebee at almost the distance the moon is away from us.
The Webb telescope, which orbits the Sun rather than the Earth, will be able to look at objects that were formed over 13 billion years ago, near the time of the Big Bang-- thus, the time machine analogy.  Another goal for the Webb is to determine how galaxies form, evolve and die.  The Webb will improve our understanding of exoplanets, those planets in other solar systems.

It was a riveting presentation, and if you missed it, you should look for an opportunity to see Tim Pinkney speak in the future.
