Next Meeting,  May 06, 2021:  Satya Mitra, Ph.D. - Igniting the Leadership within You
Dr. Satya Mitra, a member of the Rotary Club of Boston #7 in district 6606 and former Assistant Governor in district 7910, will present an inspiring program on leadership, and how his own personal experiences influenced his desire to become a leader, a humanitarian, and a Rotarian.  Program Chair Laurie Edwards became friends with him while both participated in the 2020 Polio NID (National Immunization Day) trip to India.

Dr. Mitra grew up with challenges, under the burden of poverty and extremely difficult conditions during his childhood in India.  His mother passed away when he was only three and a half years old. There were days and nights he spent as homeless with his father who became ill and ultimately became blind, but there were several people who supported him along the way and encouraged his dream of earning an education.  Satya vowed that someday, given the opportunity and the blessings of the almighty, he would dedicate his life to helping people and giving them hope, thereby fulfilling the purpose of his life.

He finished his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in India and came to the USA with only $6 in his pocket in 1976 to pursue his career in Bio-medical research. But with the spiritual guidance of his family priest, or Guru, Dr. Mitra instead began a career as a tax consultant, financial planner and investment advisor. In 1990, he established his own tax consultancy and financial planning practice. Today, he is the President and CEO of “The Guru Tax & Financial Services, Inc.” located in Worcester, MA. Starting from ground zero in his basement, his practice now occupies a professional office with employees in Worcester and serves over 500 clients in 26 different states across the USA and in many countries internationally.

Dr. Mitra is a humanitarian, a community servant and a recognized leader. He is the recipient of the Community Service Award and Action Hero Award and was twice named Rotarian of the Year. The Mayor of Worcester, MA honored Dr. Mitra with a Key to the City.

Last Meeting,  April 15, 2021:  Frank Porter - "Housing El Dorado"

Since retirement from his career in education, Frank Porter works on housing issues with community organizations and local governments.  Frank is a member of the newly established nonprofit Housing El Dorado, which was established to “create and promote affordable housing solutions and support services that nurture individuals and families while encouraging self-sufficiency.”  Frank spoke to us about the homeless situation on the Western Slope of EDC and the projects that Housing El Dorado has started to help address the problem.

Frank offered two numbers to help assess the number of homeless people in our area.  1) A winter  of 2019 study counted 490 homeless people on the Western Slope, which is estimated to have 80% of the homeless in the county; and 2) EDCOE data from 2019 estimated that 850 children who attend EDC schools are underhoused.  Frank also debunked three myths: Myth 1. "Homeless are being bussed up here from the Valley to use our services."  In fact, most of them grew up in this area.  Myth 2. "They don't want to work."  In fact, 36% were unable to work, 14% are working, and 46% are looking for work.  Myth 3. "Housing will cost too much."  In fact, supporting our labor force with local affordable housing is good business; local businesses are starved for entry-level employees.

Housing El Dorado believes that "Housing First" is the best first step to break the cycle of issues facing these people, because such a policy: 1) decreases emergency and health service costs; 2) decreases law enforcement costs; 3) improves the physical and mental health of participants; and 4) improves the overall quality of life and safety of our community.

The first major project of this organization was the "Pathways Project" which, in the absence of the Nomadic Shelter program from previous years, provided safe overnight lodging at Green Valley Church from January to March of 2021.  They had to start small in order to get the program running smoothly, supporting 20 vulnerable people on the street, and adding 5-10 more as people transitioned out.  The project provided evening entertainment like movies and reading, and provided support for those needing mental health, addiction and health care.

Upcoming projects include a Pathways 2.0 Winter Lodging Program; conducting a Housing Survey; protecting mobile home owners from huge land rent increases; and promoting affordable or transitional housing via the Placerville Armory, Federated Church and Project Homekey on the Western Slope.

We thank Frank Porter for this insight into ways we can provide service to our community by helping those least fortunate among us, and thereby helping local businesses with their workforce needs.  To hear the details of Frank's presentation, please see the Zoom meeting recording at this link to our FaceBook page.

Announcements:

Mike Dugan:
  • The St. Patrick's Day fundraiser netted us about $2,200.  Los Pinos was very helpful and interested in future similar events.  Also, we received good publicity from our signs at Los Pinos and from non-members who bought meals.
  • The Board decided that when 80% of those in our club that want to meet in person have been vaccinated, we will plan some outdoor meetings, with a hybrid/Zoom option for those who are more comfortable with that.
  • Art Cort's daughter Jennifer is planning a June 12 Celebration of Life.
Marlyn Pino-Jones:  The local chapter of People-to-People International, which Marlyn is a member, and Laurie Edwards and the late Bob Edwards were also, wants to fund a scholarship for a Japanese student to come to the US to honor Bob Edwards.  The amount is approximately $2,000 and Marlyn was wondering if this club could share in raising those funds.  Mike said that the board needs to look at it first.

Dave Sargent: There is a vacant seat on the Community Foundation Board.  If you are interested please email Dave S. or Anne Eckert. Marlyn Pino-Jones has expressed interest in the seat, and the board is interested in hearing from others who want to be considered.
