Dr. Satya Mitra presented an inspiring program on leadership, and how his own personal experiences influenced his desire to become a leader, a humanitarian, and a Rotarian. Program Chair Laurie Edwards became friends with him while both participated in the 2020 Polio National Immunization Day trip to India. Dr. Mitra earned his Ph.D. degree in India and then moved to the USA. He has lived almost 40 years in Worcester, Massachusetts, and is past-president of the Worcester club, but for the past two years he has been a member of the Boston 7 Rotary club -- so named because it was the 7th Rotary Club formed in the world. Dr. Mitra's talk, "Ignite the Leader Within You," proposed that leadership can foster inspiration and motivation, which will lead to Rotary Success. He believes that when you gain or get appointed to a leadership position in a Rotary Club, you should challenge yourself to achieve a goal. When he became President of the Worcester Rotary club, he challenged himself and he club to gain 50 new members within the next year, up from the 48 members they had at that time. Dr. Mitra wrote a book of common sense tips for entrepreneurs and leaders titled "The Five C's", which are: Connect, Communicate, Create, be Confident, and Contribute. He explained these concepts during the talk. Two great slogans that Satya adopted when he became president are: "At the end of the day, ask yourself, what significant thing have you done for your club today?" and "Member per member". He wanted each member to bring in a new member by the end of the year. Potential prospects to ask to be a guest or member are the people you pay: your doctor, your dentist, your lawyer, your accountant, etc. At the end of Satya's year as President, his club added 82 members, to bring it up too 130 members. It can be done! Satya saw a sign on President Ronald Reagan's desk that said this, and he proved it to be true. Despite the challenges of immigrating to this country, changing professions from scientist to financial advisor, and becoming club president early in his Rotary experience, he proved that "It can be done."
