Next Meeting: Feb-02-2023: Dr. Melinda Keenan: Center for Post Traumatic Growth
Dr. Melinda Keenan will speak on her work for the Center for Post Traumatic Growth. She is a licensed psychologist in California. Dr. Keenan earned her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Denver in 2000. She worked at the Sacramento VA Medical Center from 2001 to 2010. She was the head of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Team there from 2005 to 2010. She then moved to the Citrus Heights Readjustment Counseling Center and worked there until 2019. Dr. Keenan developed a treatment program to address post traumatic stress and moral injuries in combat veterans during her career at the VA. She and her colleagues have been implementing this treatment for over 20 years. In 2013, Dr. Keenan founded the non-profit, Center for Post Traumatic Growth, to more fully address the treatment needs of veterans and their families. In 2014 Dr. Keenan and her colleagues published an article detailing their treatment approach to treating Moral Injury and Post Traumatic Stress in the journal Psychotherapy. Dr. Keenan and her colleagues have presented on Moral injury, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. They published a book for Veterans, First Responders and Medical Personnel entitled Understanding & Healing Moral Injury in People of Service. Over the last 4 years Dr. Keenan and the staff of the CPTG have partnered with the Ottawa Police Association and the Ottawa Police Service to add Moral Injury as an integral component of their Fatigue Management Strategy.
Last Meeting, Jan-26-2023: Joanne Tremelling - Soropomists' Coordinator of Aid to Victims of trafficking

Joanne Tremelling told us about the anti-trafficking and victim aid programs of Soroptimist International.  Joanne was born in Placerville and lives in Orangevale. She did her undergraduate studies at UCD and then entered the Masters of Social Work (Health Concentration) program at Sacramento State. She is married with two children and four grandchildren.

To bring home the impact of human trafficking on us, Joanne told us that one of the first victims in the area was a girl abducted from the Safeway on Coach Lane in Cameron Park. The good news is that law enforcement is now doing a very good job of recovering the victims, being tough on the perpetrators and benevolent to the victims.  Just recently a girl from EDC and a girl from Placer County were recovered in Yolo County.  Among the good works of Joanne and the Sorptimists is to provide a backpack of useful items to victims by giving verious law enforcement agencies a supply of these backpacks.  Joanne also goes to court to help kids that don't have a family.

The bad news is that the demand for this is not going away and that gangs are getting involved.  12-14 years is the prime age of victims.  Educating parents about the signs of danger is a priority.  Woodland recently started a program to educate parents.  What we can do?  Tell someone or call police if you see something inappropriate.  In the Q&A, JoEllen Brooks said that the AM/PM near the freeway, which could be a danger spot, is a gathering spot for Camerado middle school girls after school lets out.  She forbids her daughter to go there.  The members were all very appreciative of hearing about this shocking crime and what is being done by Joanne and her organization.
