Next Meeting/Party:  Ju1-30-2022: Ulla hosts our Presidents Celebration

On Thursday, July 28, there will be no meeting at the Country Club.  On Saturday, July 30, though, there will be a Presidents Celebration party at Ulla Petersen's home.  Due to the pandemic there was no party to celebrate 2019-2020 President Dave Crofut, nor the first year of President Mike Dugan's term (2020-2022).  This is finally that opportunity to celebrate the service of both of these worthy ex-Presidents!  If you haven't already signed up with Ulla, please let her know in advance of your plans to attend.

Last Meeting: Jul-21-2022: Kathleen Leavitt, Harris Center
Kathleen Leavitt oversees Member Services and is in charge of the volunteer program for the Harris Center for the Arts located at Folsom Lake College. Actively involved with the Harris Center in various capacities since it opened in 2011, in 2018, as Membership Consultant, she took the membership from 430 members to 735 in less than two years and kept the membership and volunteers engaged during the pandemic.

Kathleen explained that The Harris Center for the Arts is named after former Los Rios College District Chancellor and visionary, Dr. Brice Harris. This 80,000 square foot state-of-the art performing arts center cost $50 million and provides venues and opportunities for residents to experience artistic work, celebrate cultural traditions, and participate in the creative process. Over 1,000,000 patrons visited before the pandemic and over 20,000 patrons during the recent soft reopening
The Harris Center brings artists and shows from around the world but also partners with local artists and non-profits. Since The Harris Center is home to Folsom Lake College’s visual and performing arts instructional offerings, college productions are created and/or developed on site.
The Harris Center has three different theaters: a 850 seat theater, a 200 seat City Studio Theater, and a 100 seat Scott-Skillman Recital Hall as well as the Bank of America Art Gallery. Kathleen explained that the theater would literally not operate without the more than 1700 volunteers who have helped keep the Center running. The latest development is that Harris is now managed by an outside management company called VenueTech because the costs of the theater were being subsidized by the college and it was no longer feasible for Los Rios to do that financially. Kathleen explained that membership to the Harris Center is essentially what keeps the theater going as tickets do not cover expenses. She pointed out some of the benefits of membership.
