Stories
Next Meeting, Aug-10-2023:  Laurie Edwards, "Bears, Bears and Bears!"
Laurie has been a Rotarian for 29 years.  She began her Rotary path with the El Dorado Hills Rotary Club back in 1994, holding roles as club president and assistant governor in district 5180 before joining our Rotary Club in 2015.

Photography became her passion after retiring in 2010.  Laurie now freelances part-time as a photographer for California’s oldest newspaper, The Mountain Democrat, while generously volunteering her talents to Sierra Community Access Television.   Her skills caught the eye of Around Here magazine, featuring her stunning sunrise photo of Emerald Bay on its cover.

Beyond local recognition, Laurie’s photography made a global impact.  Her work is showcased in the International Award-winning documentary, “Two Magic Drops.”  This remarkable film captures the activities of Rotarians immunizing children against polio in India during a National Immunization Day.

Two years ago, Laurie embarked on an incredible adventure with her sister-in-law, Darla, to Alaska.  Their unforgettable journey led them to Lake Clark National Park, a remote and pristine oasis nestled about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage.  The park’s rugged coastline and abundant wildlife, including one of the largest brown bear populations in the world, provided the perfect backdrop for Laurie’s camera to capture breathtaking images of bears and the Alaskan frontier.

Join us as Laurie shares her captivating photographs and stories from her Alaskan escapade, offering a glimpse into the enchanting world of bears and the wonders of nature’s beauty.  Don’t miss this extraordinary experience with an adventurous spirit and a heart for service!
Last Meeting, Aug-03-2023:  Siri Nelson, CEO Marshall Hospitals
Siri Nelson, MHA, FACHE, CPA, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Marshall Medical Center, in El Dorado County, California. Siri is a seasoned healthcare executive, with 28 years of experience in rural healthcare.  Marshall Medical Center is an independent, nonprofit community healthcare provider located in El Dorado County, California, which includes Marshall Hospital, a fully accredited acute care facility with 111 beds in Placerville; several outpatient facilities in Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills and Georgetown. Marshall is affiliated with 200 licensed practitioners and 1,600 employees.

Among the challenges that Marshall and it's peers are facing is inflation:  Labor costs are up 24% and Medical supply and drug costs are up 26%.  Also, some reimbursements are low.  Medi-Cal pays $.76 for every dollar of services provided.  Inpatient revenues are up only 9% resulting in Operating Margins that are down 10%.
