Stories
Next Meeting: Mar-10-2022, Dennis LeBlanc, Ronald Reagan Stories
In 1971, when Dennis LeBlanc was a rookie officer fresh out of the police academy for the California State Police, he was assigned to Governor Ronald Reagan’s security detail.  This was the beginning of their long-term working relationship and friendship.  When Reagan left office in January of 1975, he asked Dennis to join his Los Angeles staff.  Reagan had plans to become a future presidential candidate and Dennis was in charge of his travel plans as well as advance security work.

Five months after Reagan lost the Republican nomination to incumbent President Ford in 1976, Dennis’ wife became pregnant with twin boys and he took a job with a local telephone company to be closer to home.  In May of 1979, Dennis was granted a leave of absence to become Reagan’s “Tour Director,” until his landslide 1980 victory.  Dennis then served two years in the White House as Deputy Director of the White House Military Office overseeing the president’s travel and security plans.

Dennis helped build and improve the Reagan’s 688-acre rural ranch in Santa Barbara and became the spokesperson and decision maker for the property.   When Ronald and Nancy Reagan went to the ranch, Dennis accompanied them even after leaving his job at the White House.   Eventually, the ranch was sold to Young America’s Foundation.

The Young America’s Foundation has provided photos for Dennis to use in his presentation.  This will be a unique opportunity to learn more about our 40th president of the United States, as well as the ranch he and Nancy loved.  Dennis has some fun stories to share.  Questions are encouraged!

Last Meeting:  Mar-3-2022, Kimberly Baca and Jessica Acosta-Be Red Cross Ready (Wildfires)

Kimberly Baca, left, and Jessica Acosta are Community Preparedness Specialists for the America Red Cross through AmeriCorps.    A disaster or emergency can directly affect our daily lives at any time, often without warning.  Their presentation provided us some practical tips about planning, preparing and responding to wildfire.

Kimberly is an undergrad student at ASU majoring in Emergency Management.  She is a proud owner of four dogs and her hobbies include mountain board/biking, snowboarding and wake boarding.  Jessica is a graduate of CSU Stanislaus with a BA degree in English Poetry Writer.  “Enjoying the outdoors” is her hobby.

Their "Be Red Cross Ready" presentation had an emphasis on Wildfire Hazards which are especially relevant for many of our Club Members. They encouraged us to learn more about or wildfire risk by contacting our local or state emergency agencies and to learn our community's response plan.  They also had tips for preparing your property and home to avoid or have a better chance of withstanding a wildfire. Preparing for dealing with smoke and an evacuation was emphasized.  Those N95 masks, with which we have become so familiar, also provide protection from smoke.  It is very important to assemble a portable evacuation kit, which includes three days of supplies in a “go bag” and a 1-month supply of prescription medication.

The members were very appreciative about the valuable preparedness information that Kimberly and Jessica shared. They left us with a flyer that contained a "Wildfire Safety Checklist" and a survey to assess the effectiveness of their presentation. If you missed it, a video of their presentation is at this link.
