 Tom Elken will talk about “A Vocation in Supercomputing & Performance Engineering.” Tom grew up in Moorhead Minnesota, went to St. Olaf College in Northfield earning a B.A. with Distinction in Mathematics in 1974, and earned his Ph.D. in Operations Research at Stanford University’s School of Engineering in 1978.
Tom started his career at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, developing new algorithms for optimizing the operation and expansion of the Bell System’s local telephone networks. Moving to Silicon Valley in 1982, Tom worked in telecommunications R&D, market research, and in the computer and computer networking industries. During the last 19 years of his career, he worked on performance analysis and benchmarking of supercomputers with a concentration on the high-speed networks that allow thousands of small server computers to behave like a supercomputer. Tom was the first CEO of a non-profit standards body for parallel programming, The OpenMP ARB. Since 1999 he was both a manager and an individual contributor for performance engineering teams at companies such as Silicon Graphics, a start-up named PathScale, QLogic and Intel.
Tom moved to El Dorado Hills in 2016 and retired from Intel in 2018.
