Christmas Dinner and Auction, Dec-08-2022
The annual Christmas Dinner and Auction held on Thursday evening, December 8, was joyful, entertaining and a great success.  The Ponderosa Jazz Choir was scintillating, the food was delicious, and the raffle, silent auction, and live auction were fun and raised a lot of money for scholarships.  If you missed it or want to enjoy the party again, please see this wonderful video-slideshow put together by our resident photographer, Laurie Edwards.
Next Meeting: Dec-15-2022: Kathleen Dodge -- ED/Lake Tahoe Film & Media Office
Born and educated in the Midwest, Kathleen Dodge relocated to Southern California soon after completing her Bachelor degree with a major in theatre. She began her career in the film industry in Burbank as an NBC page, going on to work with Emmy-winning producer George Schlatter (Real People), and later helping launch young hopefuls’ careers as a talent agent.  After more than a decade in “the biz” in Los Angeles, she and her family made the move to Northern California.

It didn’t take Kathleen long to notice an intriguing unserved market in her new home county and she proposed the concept of establishing a Film Commission to the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce.   Her proposal was accepted by the Board of Supervisors and the rest, as they say, is history.  Kathleen was made the first (and to date, only) Executive Director of the newly formed El Dorado Lake Tahoe Film & Media Office, operating under the management of the County Chamber of Commerce.

In the 30-plus years since Kathleen launched the Film Commission, she has brought more than 700 projects to the community with an economic impact of over $50 million dollars and a return on investment of nearly 2000% to El Dorado County.

Last Meeting, Dec-01-2022: Laurie Edwards, The Rotary Foundation

Laurie Edwards served as president of the El Dorado Hills Rotary Club and Assistant Governor in district 5180.   She is a member of the Rotary Club of Cameron Park in district 5190, and is the club’s Foundation and PolioPlus Chair.  Laurie spoke about her passion, the Rotary Foundation and how its grants have helped people all over the world and locally.

Laurie strongly encouraged us to read the Rotary magazine and go online at www.myrotary.org to educate yourself and see the good works of Rotary through the Foundation and Polio Plus. Laurie reminded us of what RI President Jennifer Jones's logo and theme for the year was: "Imagine Rotary."  Those who knew something about Rotary's 7 areas of Focus were won prizes (a fun lottery scratcher).

Laurie described several of her inspiring and life-changing international trips (seeing is believing), including: 1) a trip to Siberia and Russia Far East to help expand Rotary; 2) a Maasai village in East Africa where newborns are not named until they reach the age of 2 or 3 years due to the high infancy death rate caused by waterborne illnesses; 3) a trip to India where she toured a factory that constructed and fitted amputees with prostheses, a ward giving polio "crawler" victims the ability to walk through numerous surgeries and intensive rehabilitation literally changing their lives, and participating in a National Immunization Day to help inoculate children in a slum.
