Next Meeting, July 25, 2024: Kristina Noble, El Dorado Disposal
Kristina Noble is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for El Dorado Disposal, the primary waste disposal company for the county. She has been with El Dorado Disposal for seven years, starting as a Customer Service Representative. As she puts, "if you want to talk trash, she will be happy to chat". Her presentation will be centered on SB 1383, the mandate that diverts organic matter from landfills. She will also discuss sustainability and recycling. This will be a presentation that impacts everyone of us.
Last Meeting, July 18, 2024: Caleb Sanford, CEO, El Dorado County Community Health Centers
Caleb Sandford is the CEO of the El Dorado County Community Health Centers. Established in 2003, the EDCHC is a federally qualified health center 501 (c) (3), providing high quality healthcare. It has a volunteer board of directors, including Ben Young, a member of the Rotary Club of Cameron Park. There are over 1,400 of these health centers in the U.S. and 174 in California. Starting with the War on Poverty in the 1960's, this health initiative was designed to expand health care in areas not fully served yet. This is the largest primary health system in the country, providing a "safety net" for over 23 million Americans. They produce more than $1,200 in saving per year per patient and add $26.5 billion dollars in economic benefits for local areas served by a Community Health Center. Some 11,000 patients are served in El Dorado County. Caleb also alerted the club that a new initiative, Prop 35, would require the state to use funds generated by taxes on managed health care plans, like Community Health Centers. Currently the state can use these funds anyway they please, whether or not it relates to health care or not. Amounting to billions of dollars, these funds are critical to serving local community health systems. He encouraged a "yes" vote on Prop 35.
Ice Cream Social at the Observatory
Just a brief reminder that we, Placerville and Pollock Pines Rotary Clubs are hosting an ice cream social for youth from our Sister City in Warabi, Japan, and their host families at the Observatory on Monday, July 29, 2024, 8-11 PM.  Rotarians and their families are invited.  Guests just pay $2 per vehicle for parking at the college. Please wear your Rotary shirt!

The Japanese students feel that this event will be one of the highlights of the exchange.  Let’s give them a warm Rotary welcome!

Words of Wisdom
A number of members asked for this week's text from Cathy Dugan of her Words of Wisdom:
Six little Stories with lots of meanings:
(1) Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer, all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That is faith.
(2) When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That is trust.
(3) Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up. That is hope.
(4) We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That is confidence.
(5) We see the world suffering, but still, we get married and have children. That is love.
(6) On an old man's shirt was written a sentence "I am not 80 years old. I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience. That is attitude.
Have a happy day and live your life like these six stories. Remember- Good friends are the rare jewels of life, difficult to find and impossible to replace!!
