Mary Cory has been director of the El Dorado County Historical Museum since 1999 and she has been working in the Museum field for over 40 years. The El Dorado County Historical Museum is located on Placerville Drive, and collects artifacts and documents related to the history of the county. Mary researches, plans and installs exhibits, helps the public with research questions, and is responsible for all aspects of the County Museum. She is always finding more fascinating information about the history of El Dorado County
Displays start with a collection of baskets and tools made by skilled artists of the Miwok, Nisanan and Washoe Native American people, and cover the Gold Rush, the logging and lumber industry, transportation, and some of the historical figures such as Snowshoe Thompson, the Goat Doctor and John Studebaker, famous for his gold-rush era wheelbarrows. The County Museum has special exhibits throughout the year. Currently, the exhibit “Women of Influence: women making history in El Dorado County” highlights some of the notable women in the county’s history with displays of dresses from the 1890s – 1930s, historical photographs and documents about their lives.
The EDH Rotary Club hosted a Tri-Tip and Crab Dinner on January 27 at 6-10pm. Laurie Edwards recruited enough people from our club to fill two tables (see pics here). It was delicious and we had a great time....all for a good cause. Thanks to Rotary Club of El Dorado Hills for being great hosts; they gave us 2 bottles of wine for each table as a thank you for supporting their event!
Gregory McCormac (left) and Brian Robinson (right), administrators at Folsom Lake College (FLC), told us about the state of, new buildings at, and offerings at the main campus and at the FLC El Dorado and Rancho Cordova Centers and online.
Folsom Lake College is relatively new, being first accredited in 2003. It recently passed the milestone of 10,000 students on campus and online. The main sources of students at the Folsom campus are students from Folsom, Oak Ridge and Ponderosa High Schools. There are a few older students too, ranging from their 30's to 80's. Under construction at the main campus is Oak Hall, which will be a 75,000 sq.ft. building to serve the Biology and Chemistry departments. The number of labs is tripling from 2 to 6.
Skills to support a career are a big focus, such as the new viticulture program developed in partnership with 8 EDC wineries and hosted at the El Dorado Center.
In the '90s and 2000's, the El Dorado Center was the mainstay of FLC, providing 23 classrooms, mainly for general education preparing students for moving on to CSU and UC campuses. Today there are a lot of partnerships occupying most of the EDC. In addition to General Education & viticulture, there are programs for EMT and Certified Nursing Assistant, a Food Pantry, the Community Observatory (thank you CP Rotary!) Dual Enrollment with El Dorado Union High School District, and Charter University Prep School uses some of the classrooms. Brian Robinson is in charge of the El Dorado Center (EDC) and he told us about the current challenges at that location. Many of the classes and student clubs hosted by the EDC are online.
Club members are very interested both in career and scholastic programs of FLC and had many questions for Greg and Brian during the Q&A period.
