Next Meeting, Apr-11-2024:  Music Contest
This week, we offer that perennial favorite, the Music Contest in which students from Ponderosa High School compete against each other for a cash prize and the chance to advance in the Rotary Area and District. We will have 3-5 students competing on various instruments, judged by club members. It will be entertaining!  Please join us.
Fireside Chat & Social
Anne Eckert (left) and her committee did another outstanding job hosting the 2nd annual Fireside Chat and social at Don and Linda Fuller's home Monday evening.  Thank you Anne and George for also bringing the delicious appetizers.  Area 6 Governor Kurt Raffetto spoke briefly about the impact of Rotary internationally and members Anne, Dave Sargent (below), President Cathy Dugan, Adam Marshall (right), and Joe Ryan spoke from the heart describing the "why" of Rotary.  The individual talks were very heartfelt; Adam's comment about Greg Woods, "we do not eat alone", and Dave's about Steve Long's tearful comment about a third-grader's joy at having her very first book said more about the "why" of Rotary Club of Cameron Park than almost anything else.   We have remarkable members who exemplify the Rotary motto, "service above self" in our community, region and internationally!
Leadership for Tomorrow Conference
Cameron Park Rotarians Laurie Edwards and Don Fuller recently served as mentors of the first annual Leadership for Tomorrow Conference focused on Ethics and Leadership for high school juniors at Union Mine High School and El Dorado High School.  They describe the day as exciting and were inspired by the 35 young leaders that participated.  The Rotary Clubs in Folsom recently hosted their 29th annual “Tomorrow Ethics and Leadership Conference” for high school juniors within their community.  Given the program’s remarkable success and their aim to broaden student involvement, the training extended into El Dorado County this year.   Wally’s Pizza, Green Valley Church, Placerville Rotary and Sheriff Jeff Leikauf were sponsors.

The session brought together high school students with local business and community leaders on a one-on-one basis to discuss leadership skills and ethical decision-making in school, the workplace, and both local and international communities.   Following breakfast and a warm welcome, students broke into smaller discussions group and paired with mentors for more engaging conversations.

The first topic, “Elements of Business Etiquette and Traits of a Leader,” focused on the importance of business etiquette for a successful first impression when meeting people.

Last Meeting, Apr-04-2024: Donna Marshall, Master Gardener, EDC
Our speaker this week, Donna Marshall, was a high school social studies teacher for 41 years in the San Juan Unified School District. She is in her sixth year of Master Gardening with a gold badge (over 1,000 hours volunteered). She currently serves on the Advisory Board as Secretary, is an office and trainee mentor, works on the plant sale and county fair committees, and volunteers in the rose garden at the Sherwood Demonstration Garden.
The Master Gardener certification is a result of a program of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE).  The UC Master Gardener Program mission is to extend research-based knowledge and information on home horticulture, pest management and sustainable landscape practices to Californians.  There are 6,154 Master Gardeners in 53 Counties in the state.  Part of the requirements to become a master gardener is to take 50 hours of training and donate 50 volunteer hours during the first year following the training.  The Master Gardners in EDC provide 3-hour classes, 29 of them in 2024, at places around the county that include the CP Community Center and the EDH Teenz Center.

Donna told us about the Sherwood Demonstration Garden, which is adjacent to the Community Observatory that our club helped develop.  It has many different gardens within it to enjoy and learn from, such as: the Butterfly, Children's, Shade, Rose, Cottage and All-Star Gardens.  Also, there are plant sales at the Demonstration Gardens at dates you can find from this calendar. Please take a tour next time you are in that area!  The members enjoyed Donna's presentation immensely even though she had to compete with big fluffy snowflakes falling outside the Country Club's windows.
