Joe Ryan: last Tuesday volunteers from the club -- PP Dave Crofut (using Janelle Horne's truck), Steve Long and Doug Bisbee and myself -- picked up 80 bicycles for delivery to Folsom Prison. Pickup was from the county recycling center and from Art Cort's storage facility. The City of Folsom delivered about 150 bikes in a big old truck. Our volunteers in the prison are focused on getting bikes ready for a big give-away in December for Christmas. We also provided them with supplies for the repairs such as paint, a chain-breaker and cleaning fluids. Dave Crofut says that Hands4Hope wants some bikes for auction and the board approved that.
Bill Hughes: Marlyn Pino-Jones and Laurie Edwards were at the cleanup of the EDC Fairgrounds organized by the Placerville Rotary Club with help from several nonprofits including EDH/CP Soroptimists. There were about 50 volunteers overall. Good progress was made, but a lot more cleanup is needed.
Jim Buckley and Bill Hughes toured the Cameron Park Lake with CP-CSD people to discuss projects that are in the planning stages, including the splash pad for kids at the lagoon area. They know our club wants to contribute to one or more projects. Nothing specific yet, but they are writing more grant requests. We already donated part of the funds for six containers for fishing line and other debris. They will soon be in place with our club's name on them.
Jim Buckley: Some time ago, at a project fair in Costa Rica, we met Derrick from the South Cowichan Rotary Club, British Columbia. Their club is doing a project with a Rotary Club in Columbia. They are applying for a grant, but they need some more money. The project is to install sewer lines and toilets in an area that doesn't have toilets. RI is no longer matching funds to the extent that they were in the past. Jim is going to request that the Board support this project (to the $2,000 level) in Columbia.
Bill Gallant: Since we last met, there was a celebration of life for past DG, Bob Clarke, and longtime member Ron Losel has passed away. Also honorary Rotarian Bernie Dowes, who was the head of the EDC Salvation Army. He organized a program with us called "Christmas in April." Bernie passed away on August 28. No immediate plans for a service due to the pandemic. Similarly, for the late Art Cort, there will be a service, but it is delayed due to the pandemic.
