Carey Buchanan, Director of Alternative Programs for the El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE), will speak on threat assessment practices and school safety programs, offering insight into how schools identify and respond to potential risks.
Carey brings more than 20 years of experience in alternative education. She oversees a wide variety of programs, including education in youth and adult correctional settings. She is also the coordinator of the countywide school-based threat assessment program and a member of the ATAP (Association of Threat Assessment Professionals). Her work reflects a strong commitment to creating safe, supportive, and educational environments for students and adults learners across a range of complex settings.
Newly appointed Cameron Park Community Services District General Manager Mark Hornstra spoke to the club about his new role, outlining his vision for the district and the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Mark noted that annual pass holders show strong loyalty, but limited growth in attracting new users. As a result, future expansion is expected to be incremental without new or enhanced attractions. To address this, staff has developed a three-phase facilities improvement plan. This approach allows staff to concentrate resources on one major area at a time.
The Community Center was selected as Phase 1 because it is the district’s primary revenue source outside of property taxes. Planned improvements include a pool slide, shade structure, expansion of the lifeguard room, and an expanded check-in and concession area. Phase 2 will involve community input on the future of Cameron Park Lake, including whether to restore the swimming lagoon and what types of recreational activities are desired. Phase 3 includes other district projects, including ongoing collaboration with community partners such as Rotary.
Mark also reported that the Farmer's Market will start on the third Friday in May and run through October- underneath the solar panels from 7:30 AM to noon.
Mark thanked the club for its continued support and reminded members of the Summer Spectacular on June 27.
Community Service Chair Joe Ryan volunteered at the Cameron Park Spring 2026 community cleanup on Saturday, April 18, held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Camerado Springs Middle School’s parking lot. In partnership with El Dorado Disposal, the Rotary Club of Cameron Park, and El Dorado County Environmental Management, the event included a convenient drop-off area for used bicycles.
Joe coordinated with Gary Clarke on the bike count, and near the end of the event, Gary and Stuart Warner arrived to load approximately 23 bicycles, along with several scooters and tricycles. The bicycles will be taken to Folsom State Prison on April 28, where they will be refurbished and later distributed to individuals in need.

What drew you to the Rotary Club of Cameron Park? What is your favorite Rotary activity? And what keeps you engaged and coming back? She reminded us that Rotary is a shared experience that encourages us to be better people, live with high ethical standards, and be fair to all concerned. She encouraged members to carry that sense of purpose forward. By doing so, we become ambassadors for Rotary and may inspire others to discover it for themselves.
